More information about Phase Locked Loops (PLL’s)

A phase locked loop (PLL) is one of the most important blocks of a RF system. The PLL is a device that generates an output signal based on the phase of the input signal. The PLL uses a feedback through which its output is able to maintain the phase of the input signal.

Here is some more information on the PLL filters on the page:

  • Type: The are many options available when selecting a PLL, some based on the device and other based on applications – PLL with integrated VCO, Frequency Synthesizer Based PLL etc.
  • Frequency (MHz): This is the operation frequency of the PLL i.e the frequency up to which the PLL can lock the phase of the input signal.
  • Output power (dBm): This is usually the power of the VCO, it is the maximum power level of the output signal.
  • Phase Noise (dBc/Hz): This is the noise power in a particular frequency band offset by 10 kHz from the carrier frequency. The lower the phase noise the better the performance of the PLL as the output signal will be less noisy.

Other parameters that might be of interest when selecting a PLL are:

  • Lock Range: The frequency range upto which the PLL can continue to lock the phase of the input signal.
  • Settling time: The time it takes for the PLL to detect and lock the phase of the input signal.
