Apple Granted Patent for mm-Wave 5G Antenna that Radiates Through a Display

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a list of patents granted to Apple that showed Apple has won a patent for antennas that could radiate through an iPhone display supporting 5G mm-Wave communications.

The patent granted to Apple covers an iPhone that is provided with wireless circuitry, and more specifically,  includes antennas arranged in an array to form a phased array antenna that may include transceiver circuitry such as centimeter and millimeter wave transceiver circuitry (circuitry that transmits and receives radio-frequency signals at frequencies greater than 10 GHz).

The antennas may include phased array antennas that are used for handling millimeter wave and centimeter wave communications. Millimeter wave communications, which are sometimes referred to as extremely high frequency (EHF) communications, involve signals at 60 GHz or other frequencies between about 30 GHz and 300 GHz.

Apple's granted patent 10,727,570 was originally filed in Q1 2018 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display and a phased array antenna that transmits radio-frequency signals at frequencies greater than 10 GHz. The display may include a conductive layer that is used to form pixel circuitry and/or touch sensor electrodes. A filter may be formed from conductive structures within the conductive layer. The conductive structures may include an array of conductive patches separated by slots or may include conductive paths that define an array of slots. The filter may include an additional array of conductive patches stacked under the array of conductive patches to allow the slots to be narrower than would be resolvable to the unaided human eye. The periodicity of the conductive structures and the slots in the filter may be selected to tune a cutoff frequency of the filter to be greater than frequencies handled by the phased antenna array.
