Knoxville Utilities Board Replaces its Wired Network with Wireless Backhaul Solutions

The Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) has selected the Harmony Enhanced MC backhaul solution from DragonWave to extend their existing fiber/wireline facilities to create a hybrid wireless and wireline network. This deployment will increase available bandwidth, reduce overall network operation and maintenance (O&M) costs and improve reliability of the overall field network.

Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) is an independent agency of the City of Knoxville that provides electricity, gas, water and water waste services to customers in Knoxville and parts of seven surrounding counties (Over 750 square miles). KUB will use Harmony Enhanced MC to create fiber type connections using wireless technology, through the radios ability to support multiple channels with high modulation (up to 2048 QAM) in a small form factor.

The Harmony Enhanced MC backhaul solution is a high capacity microwave solution that enables customers to deliver 1 Gbps of uncompressed throughput using a single radio (with 50 MHz channels) and up to 2 Gbps per radio with the industry leading Bandwidth Accelerator+ bulk compression feature. Harmony Enhanced MC also delivers the highest system gain in the industry, allowing customers to maximize capacity and minimize antenna sizes on longer links.

The DragonWave Harmony Enhanced MC is a multi-carrier packet microwave solution that operates from 6 to 42 GHz. It achieves high spectral efficiency delivering data rates up to 4 Gbps in a single radio and 8 Gbps in a single channel with MIMO or a single antenna with XPIC. This is microwave radio solution delivers up to 35 dBm of transmit power with a wide channel bandwidth of 112 MHz. It is available in a module that measures 10.5 x 10 x 6.2 inches and weighs 7.5 kg. This microwave solution is ideal for 3G backhaul aggregation, leased line relacement, last mile fiber extension, 4G and 5G mobile backhaul applications. Click here for more information.
