Low Power LoRa Based Modules for IoT Applications

RS Components, the trading brand of multi-channel provider of industrial and electronic solutions, Electrocomponents, has introduced two new series of RF modules from RF Solutions that target use in LoRa-based low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) applications for the IoT.

The new LAMBDA62 series operates in the 868/915 MHz frequency band and provides an RF output power of +22 dBm, which represents an increase of +2 dBm over existing devices. The modules also offer an increasingly sensitive receiver offering of -148 dBm compared with -137 dBm. Another key feature is the modules’ significantly lower current consumption of 4.6 mA in LoRa transceive mode compared to 10 mA offered by previous generation units. Importantly, as well as delivering improved performance, the LAMBDA62 modules are available at a lower price than existing devices. This should make them extremely attractive for new designs as well as revisions or updates of existing designs, as the new modules offer the same pinout.

RS Components is also stocking the LAMBDA80 series of LoRa modules, which is based on the recently released Semtech SX1280 silicon, designed for operation at 2.4 GHz. The SX1280 transceiver delivers ultra-long-range communication in the higher frequency band, together with the linearity to withstand heavy interference, plus minimal current consumption. This series provides a much higher bandwidth, or data rates, than the 868/915 MHz versions, thereby opening up new application opportunities that can benefit from the long range and higher data rates. In addition, use of the 2.4 GHz band means the module can be deployed worldwide.

Available in SMT and DIP packages, the LAMBDA80 series integrates a crystal, impedance matching network and track layout to provide a simple digital interface and a direct antenna connection. Programming of the modules can be achieved via the SPI interface.

Both the series of LoRa modules are now shipping from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.
