The Metis-e from Wurth Elektronik is a Radio Module that operates from 868.3 to 869.525 MHz (868 MHz band). It is designed for wireless communication between smart meters and gateways using the wM-Bus interface. This module consists of an ARM Cortex M3 processor, a radio core, voltage regulator, RF filter and 50-Ohm matching, and a high accuracy crystal. It operates in four different modes, which are, idle mode, receiving mode, transmitting mode, and standby/shutdown mode. This radio module easily switches between S, T, and C modes for meter to gateway communication (uplink). It relieves the host system of radio-specific tasks such as checksum calculation and coding and decoding operations as per the wM-Bus mode.
The Metis-e has an integrated UART interface, using which the data rate and format can be adjusted. In the Tx mode, it delivers an output power of 14 dBm and a data rate of 100 kbps, while in the Rx mode, it has a sensitivity of -107 dBm. It requires a DC supply from 2.2 to 3.8 V and consumes 28 mA of current. The Metis-e is available in a module that measures 12 x 8 x 2 mm and is ideal for smart metering, smart buildings, advanced metering infrastructure, and environmental monitoring applications.
