The MD50C-5 from Ultra is a C-Band Radar Transponder that operates from 5.4 to 5.9 GHz. It is a miniature precision augmentation device used to enhance the capability of C-band radars. This transponder uses a state-of-the-art RF-to-video detection receiver which eliminates the need for typical IF down-conversion components such as the local oscillator, mixer, and IF amplifier. It utilizes the latest solid-state modern devices and circuitry, except for the triode transmitter, to provide a reliable product with an extremely long operating life. The transponder is used primarily for range safety functions and is suitable for use in both manned and unmanned vehicles.
It delivers a Tx peak output power of 50 W and has an Rx sensitivity of -65 dBm. The MD50C-5 has a built-in series diode for protection against damage from DC input power reversal. It provides short and open circuit protection for antenna mismatch and the internal power supply stabilizes transients to the normal operating voltages for voltage transient protection. This transponder also includes a built-in duplexer (circulator/isolator) for single antenna operation and protection from high antenna reflections. It requires a DC supply from 22 to 32 V.
The MD50C-5 is available in a MIL-STD-810 enclosure that measures 10.8 x 8.9 x 5.1 cm and has SMA-female connectors. It is suitable for use in precision tracking of aircraft, sounding rockets, missiles, and drone targets, both sea and airborne.
