What is a Data Link?

A data link is a telecommunication link that connects one node to another for transmitting and receiving digital data (data communication). Data links are governed by the link protocol for enabling reliable digit data transfer between the communication nodes. There are three types of data link configurations used for establishing the communication link:

  1. Simplex
  2. Half-Duplex
  3. Full-Duplex

Simplex Mode

Simplex data link configuration allows communication between the sender and receiver in one direction only. The sender can only send data to the receiver, and the receiver can only receive the data. The receiver cannot provide a reply to the sender. This data link mode can be considered as a one-way road in which the traffic flows only in one direction.

Half-Duplex Mode

In the half-duplex data link mode, the sender and receiver can send and receive data in both directions, but not simultaneously. Communication is unidirectional at a time.

Full-Duplex Mode

Full-duplex data link allows both the sender and receiver to transmit and receive at the same time. It is like a two-way road in which traffic can flow in both directions at the same time. Full-duplex is sometimes abbreviated as FDX.
