What are RF Downconverters?

RF downconverters or Frequency Down converters are integrated assemblies that convert a high-frequency RF signal to a lower frequency IF signal. RF downconverters are widely used in Satellite Communication (SATCOM) systems along with applications in 5G, Point-to-Point radio Communication, etc. The input of a frequency down converter is an RF signal, this signal is then mixed with the LO (Local Oscillator) signal to downconvert it to an output IF (Intermediate Frequency) Frequency signal. This can be thought of as a down-conversion mixer. In the satellite industry, a down converter is often combined with a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) to form a Low Noise Block (LNB).

Important parameters to consider when looking for an RF down-converter:

Input/RF Frequency: This is the high frequency RF signal that needs to be down converted to an IF Frequency.

Output/IF Frequency: This is the down-converted IF frequency signal which can be used for further processing.

LO Frequency: This is the frequency of the Local Oscillator. The Difference between the RF frequency and LO Frequency is equal to the IF Frequency.

Phase Noise (dBc/Hz): It is the representation of random fluctuations in the phase of a waveform.

Gain (dB): Gain is the net increase in power between the input signal and the down-converted output signal.

Noise Figure (dB): NF is the ratio of the signal-to-noise ratio at the input and the signal-to-noise ratio measured at the output.
