What is an RF Driver Amplifier?

An RF driver amplifier is a type of amplifier that is used to drive subsequent stages of amplification in an RF system. They serve as an intermediary between the signal source and subsequent amplification stages. Driver amplifiers are optimized to provide moderate levels of power amplification while maintaining high linearity, gain flatness and ensuring that the amplified signal retains its fidelity and accuracy. They are typically used before the RF Power Amplifier in the RF signal chain.

The output power capacity of RF driver amplifiers typically ranges from a few hundred milliwatts (mW) to several watts, depending on the application's specific requirements and the frequency range involved. For instance, in wireless infrastructure applications, RF driver amplifiers might provide output power levels ranging from a few hundred milliwatts to a few watts to drive a power amplifier responsible for amplifying the signal before it is sent out via an antenna. These amplifiers are also often optimized to provide a specific gain level and can be engineered to match the impedance of the subsequent stages of the circuit, ensuring efficient power transfer and minimal signal loss.

How do you select an RF Driver Amplifier?

The selection process for an RF driver amplifier is the same as selecting any other RF amplifier. You will need to specify the required frequency, gain and power level of the driver amplifier. It is important to make sure that the output power level of the driver amplifier will be able to drive the power amplifier in the following stage. In addition to this, the gain flatness and linearity should also be evaluated.

everything RF has listed RF driver amplifiers from the leading companies. Use the parametric search tools to find amplifiers based on specification.
