What are EMC Pre-Amplifiers?

EMC Pre-amplifiers are used to amplify signals before they are tested or evaluated by EMC test equipment. These amplifiers are a very important part of the EMC Testing ecosystem. Often when electronic components are being tested or evaluated, the signal generated is too weak and thus requires amplification. EMC pre-amplifiers amplify the signals that are otherwise suppressed below the noise floor of the EMC receiver. They are also used to reduce the effects of interference and noise during EMC measurements.

Important parameters when looking for EMC Pre-Amplifiers:

Operating Frequency (MHz/GHz): This is the frequency range at which a device is fully functional or provides the best performance.

Gain (dB): It is the ratio of output to input power or amplitude. This is measured in dB.

Noise Figure (dB): This is a critical parameter for an EMC pre-amplifier. The lower the noise figure, the higher the signal-to-noise ratio of a system. Typically, a low noise figure can be translated to better and reliable results.

Output Power (dBm/W): It is the maximum power that the amplifier can deliver.
