What are Bluetooth Modules?
A Bluetooth Module is a device that provides wireless connectivity over Bluetooth protocols. It usually consists of a Bluetooth transceiver, an MCU and an antenna. They provide connectivity in short to mid-range applications with data transfer rates of up to 2 Mbps. Bluetooth modules are used in a wide range of devices that include smart phones, audio devices, sensors, fitness equipment, automation etc.
Important parameters for Bluetooth Modules:
Bluetooth version: Bluetooth protocols have been released in several versions over the years with Bluetooth version 5.2 being the latest (as of June 2021). Different Bluetooth versions have different data transfer rates, receiver sensitivity, range and different features. Click here to learn more about the different Bluetooth versions.
Data rate: This is the maximum speed at which the Bluetooth module can transmit and receive data. Currently, Bluetooth supports a data rate of up to 2 Mbps in the latest version.
Range: This is the maximum distance up to which a Bluetooth module can transmit signals and receive signals.
Receiver sensitivity: Receiver sensitivity is the measure of the minimum signal strength the Bluetooth receiver can pick up.
Interfaces: A Bluetooth module can be connected to other devices via an interface. A Bluetooth module may support several interfaces through which it can be controlled. Some common interfaces include I2C, UART, SPI etc.
Modulation schemes: Modulation is the process of converting data into wireless signals so that it can be transmitted. The modulation technique used can affect transmission speed, amount of transferable data and range up to which data can be transferred. A Bluetooth module may support several modulation techniques for the transmission of data. The modulation schemes are usually different for the different versions of Bluetooth.
