What are Thread Modules?

Thread Modules are modules that provide wireless connectivity using the Thread protocol. The Thread protocol is a low power, secure, mesh networking protocol based on IEEE 802.15.4 and 6LoWPAN. It enables device-to-device and device-to-cloud communications creating an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) based mesh network. A Thread network can link more than 250 devices and has self healing properties so that even if one module goes down, the network can continue to operate. Thread modules often provide connectivity over multiple wireless protocols like Zigbee, Bluetooth, NFC etc. Thread modules usually consist of a transceiver, an MCU and additional circuitry such as RF switches, Power Amplifiers and filters.

Important parameters to consider when looking for a Thread Module:

Wireless Protocols Support: Thread Modules often support multiple protocols like Zigbee, Bluetooth, NFC etc. which allows for multi-spectrum wireless connectivity.

Data Rate: This is the maximum speed at which the thread module can transmit and receive data.

Range: This is the maximum distance up to which a thread module can transmit and receive wireless signals.

Receiver sensitivity: Receiver sensitivity is the measure of the minimum signal strength the thread module can detect.

Interfaces: Thread module is connected to the device via an interface. It may support several interfaces through which the module can be controlled.
