What is a ZigBee Module?

Zigbee modules are wireless modules based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Zigbee protocol. This protocol is a low power mesh networking protocol that has been designed to transmit data wirelessly. It has been developed for low datarate IoT applications.

ZigBee modules use the 868 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency bands. This low power standard has been developed for battery-operated devices. It uses DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) modulation and can be used to connect a network of up to 65,000 nodes. The ZigBee protocol uses 128-bit AES encryption and has low latency. The standard was originally launched in the early 2000s, but has since then been updated. The latest version of ZigBee as of now is ZigBee 3.0.

Important parameters to Consider When Looking for Zigbee Modules: 

Frequency Band: ZigBee uses three frequency bands - 868 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz

Data Rate: This is the maximum speed at which a Zigbee module can transmit and receive data.

Range: This is the maximum distance up to which a Zigbee module can transmit and receive wireless signals. This can vary based on the frequency selected.

Receiver Sensitivity: Receiver sensitivity is the measure of the minimum signal strength the Zigbee module can detect.

Interfaces: The Zigbee module is connected to the device via an interface. It may support several interfaces through which the module can be controlled.

Supported Communication Methods: Zigbee Modules often support multiple protocols like Zigbee, Bluetooth, NFC etc. which allows for multi-spectrum wireless connectivity. They often provide connectivity over multiple wireless protocols like Thread, ANT+, Bluetooth, NFC etc.
