RF Power Meter Basics & Selection

RF Power Meters are used to measure electrical power at RF frequencies. Power sensors are connected to the power meter to measure power levels of a signal. The measured signal is displayed on the screen of the power meter. Meters usually have a wide dynamic range and are usually limited in power range and sensitivity by the power sensor used for measurement. Power meters can usually test average power, RMS Power and Peak Power levels. It is important to check the measurement types of a power meter before selection. The main criteria when selecting a power meter are:

Channels: Power Meters are available in Single Channel and Double Channel configurations.

Measurements: This can be Peak Power Measurements, Average Power Measurements, Rise/Fall Measurements, Peak to Avg Power Measurements etc.

Frequency (MHz): This is the frequency range over which the signal can be detected, this is usually dependent on the power sensor being used.

Power Range (dBm): This is the power range that can be measured using the meter. This is also dependent on the power sensor being used.

Connectors: This is the connector used to connect the sensor to the device.
