Addressing the need of low cost, low power radio solu-tions for fairly simple wireless applications within our homes, offices and the industrial envi-ronment, the Zigbee™ wireless technology and the underlying IEEE 802.15.4 standard are specifically designed to provide a cost-effective, standard-based and flexible wireless network, which supports low power consumption, relia-bility, interoperability and security for control and monitoring applications with low to moder-ate data rates. The complexity and cost of the IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee compliant devices are intended to be low and scalable in order to enable broad commercial adaptation within costsensitive applications. System-on-chip (SoC) sil-icon solutions for IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee applica-tions must therefore be optimized to meet the challenging low-cost and low-power targets.
