Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication helps vehicles to wirelessly communicate with surrounding infrastructure components like lane markings, road signs, and traffic lights. V2I technology facilitates bi-directional wireless exchange of information between vehicles and the road infrastructure.

The aim of this type of communication is primarily to enable safety applications like avoiding motor vehicle crashes due to various reasons like road conditions, weather conditions, roadside construction or faulty traffic lights. This technology alerts the driver about crashes, traffic jams, sharp curves, and with recommended speeds.

V2I technology connect vehicles, infrastructure and pedestrians in a reliable network framework where all entities provide information about the weather, road conditions, traffic conditions, traffic jams, sharp curves or even accidents. This network provides a Non-Line of Sight operation with range of up to 100 meters and works well in high traffic congestion, bad weather or potential hazards with high accuracy. V2I technology can also be used for automatic payments of Parking, Toll charges etc.

Use Cases of V2I Technology:

  • Dynamic Traffic Light Control: V2I technology can help manage the traffic lights for emergency vehicles like ambulances, the fire brigade or police cars.
  • Curve Speed Warning: This technology can warn the driver to slow down the car, if the speed is more than the ideal speed for an upcoming road curve, which may cause an accident.

Alerts related to Oversize Vehicle Warning, over speed and stop sign violation warnings are other applications of V2I technology.
