Anritsu has delivered the world’s first vehicle level 5G Over-The-Air test system in collaboration with leading OTA test vendor, MVG. The system, consisting of MVG SG3000 as full-scale vehicle antenna measurement and OTA testing, and Anritsu MT8000A/MT8821C as a radio communication test set, fully supports cellular technologies including 4G LTE and 5G NR at FR1 for both SA & NSA. The system enables characterizing comprehensive wireless performance such as radiation performance and receiver sensitivity on 5G as well as 4G LTE. Toyota has selected Anritsu for this 5G OTA test system.
5G-NR has opened up many verticals enabling an all-around user experience. Security, integrity and latency of messages are critical impacting vehicle telematics and have major implications extending to the safety of people. Compared to handheld cellular devices which have been a foray of pre-4G enhancements, the RF performance in automotive involves a larger footprint and has to be studied for the system in its entirety. In automotive, the antenna and its layout bring in further dynamism vs a small form factor handheld wireless device.

OTA Measurement
Automotive services operate at specific angular ranges in relation to the vehicle like Mobile Network communication (Near Hemisphere 60° - 120° or 90°), V2V, V2I, V2P (80° - 100° or 90°) and GNSS service (0°- 60°). The measurements have to take this into consideration, and the ease of comparison of absorbing, and reflective ground. This results in a more complex and larger solution footprint to address the RF characterization challenges. It also requires OEMs to test their products from design to deployment in larger shield chambers as shown in the figure with control of the measurement paths and at different angles. Characterizing performance for far field or near field and verifying sensitivity and RF figure of merit is required per the compliance regulations.
