What are Cryogenic Coaxial Cables?

Cryogenic Coaxial Cables are coaxial cables that are designed to operate at ultra-low cryogenic temperatures. These cables are made of low thermal conductivity metals in the center and outer conductors. The low thermal conductivity materials minimize the effect of low temperatures from outside and allow transmission of RF signals in extremely low temperatures. 

A coaxial cable is an electrical cable that transmits radio frequency (RF) signals from one point to another. Cryogenic coax cables are semi-rigid cables and do not possess high flexibility due to metals used in the center and outer conductors of the cables.

Important parameters for Cryogenic Coaxial Cables:

  • Cut-off Frequency: This is the maximum frequency up to which the cable can be used. Most cables are designed to operate up to a particular frequency beyond which the losses increase, and the cable no longer operates properly.
  • Operating Temperature: This is the range of temperature in which the cryogenic cable can provide the desired performance.
  • Power: This is the maximum RF signal power that can be handled by a coaxial cable at a particular frequency. 
  • Impedance: Impedance or characteristic impedance is the equivalent resistance of a coaxial cable. Most cables have an impedance of 50 ohms or 75 ohms. It is important to select the cables based on the impedance of the system or device it is being connected to.
  • Shielding Effectiveness: It is the relative ability of a cable’s shield to screen out undesirable interference. In coaxial cables, the outer conductor provides a shield to keep interfering signals from getting in and to keep signals from leaking out to become undesirable interference for nearby devices.
  • Connectors: Coaxial cables provide lines for transmission between two components or devices. It is connected to these components/devices via connectors. A coaxial cable can have different connectors on either end or the same connector on both ends.
