What’s Next in 5G - Ep. 4: Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Fiber through the Air

Qualcomm Technologies VP of Engineering Vanitha Kumar invites you backstage to hear from the people behind our 5G technology. In What’s Next in 5G, a series of six episodes, you’ll learn how we develop the technologies of tomorrow.

In Episode 4, Qualcomm Senior Director of Product Management Gautam Sheroan explores fixed wireless access, and how our breakthroughs in fixed wireless access can help with one of society’s biggest technological challenges: equal and stable broadband access for all. 1 in three people in the world still lacks of internet access, and for many of those who are online the connectivity is not reliable.

Historically, deploying fiber in “last mile” communities has been costly and time consuming, resulting in poor internet access. We can do better by inventing products that enable our customers, partners, and OEMs to ensure broadband access and digital transformation for all.

In 2019, Qualcomm Technologies announced the first-generation Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Platform to proliferate FWA devices. In 2020, we achieved record distances over 5G mmWave Fixed Wireless Access at gigabit speeds.

In this episode of our What’s Next in 5G series, Gautam shares excitement about our announcement of the Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform Gen 2, featuring elements of our latest Qualcomm 5G technology: the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System; the Qualcomm QTM547 mmWave antenna module, our second generation extended-range mmWave solution; sub-6 GHz support with eight receive antennas, a world first; and the Qualcomm 5G Fixed Wireless Access Platform Gen 2 Reference Design.

These additions to our already rich portfolio of FWA solutions will push the boundaries of 5G and help provide equitable access to broadband to all communities, no matter how remote.
