Diode-Detector Design Using Keysight PathWave Advanced Design System (ADS) and Modelithics Models

Converting an RF input signal into a DC output voltage can be accomplished by means of an RF power detector. The DC voltage that the detector generates is proportional to the power level of the RF input signal. RF power detectors are used for applications like automatic gain control (AGC), transmit antenna power monitoring, and many others. One common RF power detector implementation is a diode-based detector. In this application note, we will focus on diode-based detectors by presenting the design of a 2.45-GHz detector circuit.

The detector is designed using Keysight Technologies’ PathWave Advanced Design System (ADS) software. Modelithics measurement-based models are used for the diode and all other components in the design. All models used in this example are included in the Modelithics COMPLETE Library™. Measured data of the detector is compared to the simulated results obtained when using Modelithics models for all  components. For comparison, measured data is also compared to the simulated results achieved when using ideal component models.
