Small Cell Shipments to Surge in 2015

StatsAn annual report of a Small Cells market study carried out by Mobile Experts shows very promising signs of an upsurge in near-term shipments. The report suggests some small cell deployment categories may double or even triple in 2015. The detailed analysis and investigation into split-baseband architectures for low power RRH indicates the CPRI radio head will change toward a new architecture with lighter requirements for the 'fronthaul' connection to centralized baseband processing and will have a great impact on the small cell market.

The new market study provides details on bands, air interfaces, power levels, and baseband processing options. Major operators have completed their trial phase and officially initiated the deployment phase. As a result of this, the small cell market is expeacted to surge in almost every category this year: Residential, Enterprise, Carrier, and Rural, as well as Low Power RRH.

This report also tackles the introduction of new technologies such as License Assisted Access (LAA) and Wi-Fi integration for small cells. The lines between some market categories are now blurred as the technology adapts to provide mobile data at lower cost.
