Future G Summit to Take Place at IMS 2024 in Washington D.C. Next Week

The IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS) will be organizing Future G Summit this year. The summit will feature four sessions throughout the day, each focusing on a different theme: Spectrum Co-Existence and Sustainability, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs), Metaverse Technologies, and 6G Technologies.

Each of the themed sessions will feature speakers from industry describing some of the interdisciplinary concepts enabling these Future G systems. At the conclusion of each session, there will be an interactive panel comprising technical experts who will field questions from the audience and discuss some of the challenges for the realization of Future G networks. The Summit will conclude with inviting all of its attendees down to the IMS Exhibition to take part in the Industry Hosted Reception. The fee includes a morning and afternoon refreshment break.

Senior Spectrum Advisor, GSMA

Bio: Dr. Rawat is President of Expert Strategies International, a US-based consulting firm, advising national and international organizations on telecommunication policies and regulations. She is consulting for GSMA as Senior Spectrum Advisor. In 2014 she was awarded "Officer of the Order of Canada" for her "contributions to telecommunications engineering and for leadership in establishing the global regulatory framework for radio spectrum management". She is a Fellow of WWRF and member of the External Advisory Board of Spectrum X of NSF, their innovation center for spectrum.

Edward Tiedemann
Qualcomm Fellow and SVP of Engineering, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Bio: Dr. Edward G. Tiedemann, Jr. is an IEEE Fellow, a Qualcomm Fellow, and a Senior Vice President of Engineering of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.  He created Qualcomm's worldwide standardization and industry organization activities which he led until he recently stepped back to focus on technical issues.  Dr. Tiedemann has been active in every G since his instrumental work in the design and development of the TIA/EIA/IS-95 CDMA system.  Dr. Tiedemann has almost 300 granted US patents.  He has been active in many industry organizations, sits on the advisory boards of several universities, and has received numerous recognitions for his work.

Bio: Dr. Ryan Stevenson is a founding member of Kymeta and currently fills the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist, where he leads R&D and Intellectual Property efforts. Ryan has worked on the development of Kymeta’s metamaterials technology since 2011, where his early work at Intellectual Ventures helped spin out and create Kymeta. Ryan has an extensive background in RF/microwave engineering, photonics, and semiconductor/thin film manufacturing. Ryan holds a B.S. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Southern California.

Bio: Munehiro Matsui received a B.E. and M.E. in Information Engineering from Nagoya University in 1998 and 2000. He joined NTT laboratories in 2000 and has been engaged in the research and development of wireless communications systems.

Kamran Etemad
Senior Technology Advisor, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Bio: Kamran Etemad is a principal technology expert, currently a senior technical advisor at FCC and Adjunct Faculty at UMD where he also received his Ph.D. in 1996. Kamran has published numerous technical papers including two books, and had made numerous contributions to standards and hold 85 issued patents in 3G/4G/5G systems.

Alan Norman
Public Policy Director, Meta Platforms

Bio: Alan Norman joined Meta's connectivity policy team in 2016 and actively supports Meta's Spectrum and Connectivity initiatives. Alan is a long-time advocate for improved broadband and internet access, shared infrastructure, and spectrum for next generation technologies.  Recently Alan has been engaged on spectrum for AR/VR, Wi-Fi, UWB and 5G with a focus on enabling the Metaverse.  Alan holds a BS in Mathematical Sciences from Stanford University and an MS in Management from Stanford's Graduate School of Business where he was a Sloan Fellow.

Carlos Cordeiro

Bio: Dr. Carlos Cordeiro is an Intel Fellow and serves as the wireless CTO in Intel's client computing group. Carlos leads Intel's global wireless connectivity standards and ecosystem team and is responsible for defining Intel's next generation wireless connectivity technology strategy, ecosystem engagements, and technical regulatory work. He is the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Communications Standards Magazine and an IEEE Fellow.

“Networks for Metaverse”

Bio: Tibi Grigoriu, Senior Director Strategy and Technology, is responsible for driving Nokia transport strategy for critical networks. Tibi has played a leading role in defining the company’s evolution of mobile transport architecture. He has over 20 years professional experience bringing together strategic thinking and operational hands-on product delivery. Tibi was awarded Nokia Bell Labs Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff and holds a Master of Applied Science from Concordia University, an Executive MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ottawa University.

With extensive industry experience (e.g., BRCM, Intel, FB Connectivity), he brings deep expertise in connectivity technology development, chipset design, and international standards contribution.

Martin Weiss
Director of FutureG Applied Research, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering

Bio: Dr. Martin Weiss is currently the Director for FutureG Applied Research, and Technical Lead for Resilient and Open Commercial Solutions within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. In this capacity, Dr. Weiss oversees multiple efforts to promote FutureG applied research which enable government, academia, and industry to build commercially useful solutions to meet the Department of Defense's wireless communications needs.
