Oso Semiconductor Develops Game-Changing RF Beamforming Chipsets for Phase Array Antennas

Oso Semiconductor is developing a new class of power-efficient, high-performance chipsets for wireless applications with electrically steered antennas also known as phased-array antennas. Their circuit innovations offer dramatic system-level improvements in C-SWAP and interference resilience.

Current state-of-the-art phased array chipsets largely rely on improvements in semiconductor process node RF performance and digital integration. This provides only modest improvements in phased array performance over time. Oso Semi's ultralow-loss beamforming IP and related technology innovations provide up to a 4x improvement in power, size, and weight of phased array systems along with a 10x improvement in linearity. Oso Semi has reduced the number of power-hungry and expensive circuits in the front end of a phased array by up to 4x using a new architecture enabled by their ultra-low loss beamforming IP.

Key Features:

  1. Up to 4x less power consumption per channel: Reduce system power, and associated weight, volume, and cost, by up to 4x for target performance (G/T & EIRP) over conventional state-of-the-art beamforming chipsets with loss-less beamforming chipsets.
  2. Up to 2x less silicon area: Reduce system BOM costs by using smaller chips that are lower cost to manufacture and easier to integrate into standard PCB tiles.
  3. Up to 40 dB (10,000x) higher dynamic range: Dramatically increased interference resiliency achieved by spatial filtering before critical electronics and linearity improvements. Inherently more resilient to real-world operating conditions, both unintentional and intentional jamming.

Impact of these state-of-the-art phased array chipsets

Cost-effective High-Performance SATCOM Antennas for the Masses: Oso Semi’s circuit innovation and algorithms directly reduce the biggest system cost drivers in SATCOM AESAs, the RF power consumption and chip cost. Allowing you to achieve the costs and performances required to unlock new markets.

Interference Resilient and Low C-SWAP Phased Arrays for Defense Applications: For critical frontline applications like wearable or portable communication systems and drones, the benefits of large reductions in power consumption are enormous. Translating to (1) increased range, due to lighter batteries and heat sinks; (2) improved mission capabilities, due to the addition of comms and sensors on smaller platforms that previously could not utilize these capabilities; (3) improved survivability for allied forces, due to improved EMI resilience and smaller form factors.

Crossover Appeal in 6G & Automotive Radar Markets: Bringing the benefits of lower power consumption and cost to 5G/6G, defense radar, and automotive radar markets soon.
