MatSing, a global leader in high-capacity lens antenna technology, is approaching a significant milestone in its partnership with Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN Co). With nearly 2,000 lens antennas deployed, MatSing continues to play a key role in expanding fixed wireless access (FWA) and improving broadband connectivity across regional and rural areas in Australia.
Bridging the Digital Divide in Australia
NBN Co is focused on enhancing competition and innovation in the Australian telecommunications sector by providing greater broadband access across the country. With an ongoing network investment strategy, NBN Co aims to extend fiber networks, enhance Fixed Wireless coverage, and improve satellite capabilities to deliver faster speeds and increased capacity to underserved communities.
MatSing’s advanced lens antennas are integrated into NBN Co’s Fixed Wireless network, ensuring seamless broadband service in areas where fixed-line infrastructure is not feasible. The deployment includes three primary MatSing models—MS-9SH90-FWB, MS-MBA-4.4-SH2-SH2-45M, and MS-MBA-6.6-F2-F2-45M—offering solutions with up to 12 independent beams while supporting mid-band spectrum, including 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz.
Expanding Fixed Wireless Coverage with Advanced Antenna Technology
MatSing’s unique multi-beam lens antennas have been instrumental in optimizing NBN Co’s Fixed Wireless service, allowing signals to reach up to 29 kilometers from a tower. This capability enables economic viability for broadband expansion into previously underserved rural areas.
“Our lens antennas are uniquely designed to address FWA requirements and bring connectivity to regional, rural, and remote broadband users,” said Bo Larsson, CEO of MatSing. “We are proud to have worked alongside NBN Co for over six years, and reaching the milestone of nearly 2,000 antennas deployed is a testament to our commitment to bridging the digital divide.”
NBN Co’s Commitment to Faster and More Reliable Broadband
In March 2022, NBN Co announced a $750 million investment in its Fixed Wireless and satellite networks to deliver faster speeds and improved service to homes and businesses in semi-rural, regional, and remote parts of Australia. The company has since been upgrading over 2,300 fixed wireless towers with next-generation 4G and 5G mmWave technology, as well as enhancing customer premises equipment to increase range, speed, and capacity.
“The NBN Fixed Wireless network is a core part of our infrastructure, now reaching more than 790,000 homes and businesses across approximately 345,000 square kilometers of regional Australia,” said Mark Barnett, GM of Fixed Wireless Engineering at NBN Co. “The completion of our Fixed Wireless Upgrade Program means more communities can experience the positive transformation of faster speeds and more reliable broadband.”
