JAXA Partners with Spirent to Advance Lunar Navigation with Industry-First PNT Simulation Solution

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has selected Spirent Communications to provide a groundbreaking lunar positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) simulation solution for lunar exploration initiatives. Spirent’s PNT X solution enables JAXA to simulate lunar PNT services within a controlled lab environment before deployment on the Moon. This simulation process is vital for testing and validating mission-critical navigation equipment, ensuring they meet the stringent LunaNet specifications and remain adaptable for evolving space exploration needs.

Enhancing Lunar Navigation with Cutting-Edge Simulation

By leveraging PNT X, JAXA can now experiment with novel S-band signals to assess receiver performance for standalone Lunar PNT signals or a hybrid approach incorporating Earth-based L-band GNSS infrastructure. This capability allows researchers to evaluate the precision and reliability of lunar navigation systems, ensuring they can withstand the extreme conditions of space.

Dr. Masaya Murata, Lunar PNT Lead at JAXA, emphasized the importance of advanced simulation capabilities: “JAXA’s lunar exploration initiatives require sophisticated testing platforms to ensure our navigation systems perform reliably in the challenging lunar environment. Spirent’s lunar PNT simulation solution provides us with the flexibility and precision needed to develop next-generation navigation technologies before deployment on the Moon. This collaboration represents a major step toward building the infrastructure for sustainable lunar exploration and future human presence on the Moon.

Spirent’s Legacy in Space Navigation

This collaboration builds on Spirent’s long-standing relationship with JAXA, which began in 2011 when Spirent technology was used to verify the performance of early Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) receivers. Over the years, Spirent has continued to support QZSS enhancements and space-based navigation advancements.

Ricardo Verdeguer Moreno, Lead Product Manager at Spirent, highlighted the company’s commitment to space innovation: “Supporting agencies like JAXA in their mission to advance space exploration has been at the heart of what we do for nearly 40 years. Our lunar PNT simulation solution delivers the precision and adaptability needed for next-generation applications like lunar navigation. By providing these essential tools, we continue to be the trusted partner for leading space agencies and innovators.

Shaping the Future of Lunar Exploration

Spirent’s lunar PNT simulation technology opens up new possibilities for global space agencies, satellite developers, and organizations planning lunar missions. By offering a high-performance testing platform, Spirent helps pave the way for reliable and scalable navigation systems on the Moon.

As space exploration advances, Spirent remains a key player in providing cutting-edge simulation solutions, ensuring that critical navigation technologies are thoroughly tested before deployment.
