everything RF @ IMS 2026: Spectrum Control RF+ SiP Platform for Multiple Integrated RF Functions

At IMS 2026, everything RF spoke with Steven Pospischil, RF Engineering Manager at Spectrum Control, who presented the company’s RF+ System-in-Package (SiP) platform developed for millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency conversion and RF system miniaturization. The demonstration at their booth (#20015) featured SCRS-00-1003, a compact dual-channel transceiver that integrates both block upconversion and block downconversion capabilities within a single package. The device is housed in a 30 mm × 30 mm BGA form factor, enabling high levels of integration in space-constrained RF systems.

The RF+ SiP platform supports frequency conversion across a wide range, covering millimeter-wave bands from 18 GHz to 40 GHz, and traditional operating bands from 2 GHz to 18 GHz. Multiple RF functions have been integrated into a single compact architecture, including amplification, digital attenuation, and band selection, along with temperature sensing and built-in test functionality. This level of integration reduces the need for multiple discrete components, simplifying system design and improving overall efficiency.

The system demonstrated a loopback test to showcase its performance. In this setup, signals were converted from the 26 GHz to 40 GHz range down to the 3 GHz to 17 GHz band and then upconverted again. The test highlighted the spectral purity and stability of the transceiver across the conversion process.

Spectrum Control also presented other variants within the RF+ SiP family. These include dual-downconverter and dual-upconverter configurations, as well as hermetic module options that integrate additional functions such as local oscillator generation and power regulation.

The RF+ SiP platform is designed to support RF system miniaturization and modularization. By combining multiple RF functions into a single package, it enables higher levels of integration for next-generation RF and microwave systems while reducing design complexity. Its intended application areas include Radar, Smart Antennas, Wireless Comms, Electronic Warfare, Aerospace, Unmanned Systems, and Test & Measurement Equipment.
