PFAS-free interconnects are connectors, cable assemblies, and other interconnection products that are designed and manufactured without the use of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). These chemicals have long been used in electronic and RF interconnects because of their exceptional electrical insulation, chemical resistance, thermal stability, and low-friction properties. However, growing environmental concerns and evolving regulations are driving the industry toward PFAS-free alternatives.

In RF and microwave interconnects, PFAS are most commonly found in fluoropolymer materials such as PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene), PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy Alkane), and ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene). These materials are widely used as dielectric insulators, cable insulation, and protective jackets because they provide low dielectric loss, excellent impedance stability, and reliable performance over a wide temperature range.

The transition to PFAS-free interconnects is largely being driven by increasingly stringent environmental regulations, particularly in Europe, where authorities are proposing restrictions on the use of PFAS due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. Many equipment manufacturers are also adopting sustainability initiatives and requesting PFAS-free components to prepare for future regulatory changes and reduce their environmental impact.

To eliminate PFAS, manufacturers are replacing fluoropolymers with alternative high-performance engineering plastics and thermoplastics, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), liquid crystal polymers (LCP), and other advanced materials. These alternatives are selected based on the electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements of the application.

Developing PFAS-free RF interconnects presents several engineering challenges. Materials such as PTFE have a very low dielectric constant and loss tangent, making them ideal for high-frequency signal transmission. Replacing these materials while maintaining the same electrical performance, operating temperature range, and long-term reliability requires careful material selection and product design. As a result, some PFAS-free products may involve trade-offs in terms of insertion loss, maximum operating temperature, or mechanical characteristics, although material technologies continue to improve.

PFAS-free interconnects are becoming increasingly common across industries such as telecommunications, automotive electronics, industrial automation, medical devices, and aerospace.
