Scientific Microwave Corporation Introduces K-Band Circularly-Polarized Satellite Feed Assembly

Scientific Microwave Corporation (SMC) has introduced a K-Band Circularly Polarized RX Satellite Feed Assembly, operating across a frequency range of 17.7 to 22.2 GHz, designed to deliver superior signal integrity and polarization purity for advanced satellite communication systems. This new feed assembly ensures reliable circular polarization—critical for dependable data transmission.

This satellite feed assembly consists of three precision-engineered components: an Orthomode Transducer (OMT), WR51 E-plane hybrid couplers, and a corrugated horn antenna. The WR51 hybrid coupler provides a precise 90° phase shift between ports, enabling optimal conditions for circular polarization (CP). The OMT, designed with a turnstile junction, offers excellent axial ratio and high port-to-port isolation across the wide K-band spectrum.

The feed assembly is engineered for double-track signal reception through two ports interfacing with WR51 standard rectangular waveguides. This configuration supports high RHCP/LHCP isolation of 17 dB and has an axial ratio of less than 0.6 dB, ensuring minimal signal degradation and high polarization purity. Additionally, the system has an insertion loss of 0.6 dB and a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.30:1—further emphasizing high efficiency and low signal reflection.

The assembly is built for durability and integration ease, featuring aluminum 6061 construction with standard UG-1530/U and UG-597/U square cover flanges with tapped holes. Designed to handle average power levels up to 650W CW per port, this feed assembly is suitable for robust operational environments.
