SENTINEL Suite from MPG Speeds Up RF Detection and Moves Processing to the Tactical Edge

Microwave Products Group (MPG) has developed an electronic surveillance platform called SENTINEL, which can accelerate detection and categorization of radio-frequency activity. By moving advanced processing and decision-making closer to the tactical edge, the system reduces the workload on human operators and speeds up response times.

The SENTINEL solution integrates broadband signal receivers with intelligent software that applies machine-learning techniques specifically trained on radio-frequency data. This approach enables the system to automatically distinguish between different types of transmissions and surface signals that may be operationally relevant. Rather than requiring analysts to manually examine crowded spectral views, SENTINEL autonomously evaluates activity across a wide frequency span - approximately 2 MHz to 18 GHz - and prioritizes emissions that align with defined mission objectives.

Beyond signal recognition, SENTINEL places strong emphasis on locating signal sources. It aggregates data from multiple sensing nodes and leverages a mix of direction-finding approaches, such as angle-based measurements and time or frequency difference calculations, to determine transmitter positions. These location estimates are then overlaid on digital maps, allowing decision-makers to quickly understand both the nature of a signal and its geographic origin in near real time.
