Raytheon, part of RTX, is investing $100 million to expand its facility in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The expansion focuses on increasing capacity so the company can accelerate testing of its Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radar, while also boosting production of key components for the Patriot GEM-T missile. Both efforts aim to meet the growing global demand for air and missile defense systems.
The LTAMDS system, being supported through these investments, is a next-generation radar designed to counter advanced threats, including hypersonic weapons. This move comes eight months after Raytheon began a separate $53 million expansion of its radar production facility in Andover, Massachusetts.

Raytheon already has contracts to supply multiple LTAMDS radars to the U.S. Army and Poland. The program has also recently completed its ninth successful flight test, during which the radar’s multiple arrays were used to track and intercept a test target.
The company is increasing production of the Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T). This missile is designed to intercept a wide range of airborne threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, and serves as a key component of the widely deployed Patriot air and missile defense system.
"This investment strengthens our ability to deliver critical air and missile defense capabilities to customers around the world," said Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon. "Expanding in Portsmouth allows us to scale production, advance LTAMDS testing, and ensure the U.S. Army and our international partners receive these systems as quickly as possible."
