The R&S Series4200 from Rohde & Schwarz are Modular, Multi-Channel Software-Defined Radios (SDRs) that operate from 112 to 156 MHz (VHF-Band) and 225 to 400 MHz (UHF-Band). They provide a channel spacing of 8.33/25 kHz for VHF and 8.33/12.5/25 kHz for UHF. These SDRs are suitable for applications ranging from small airport emergency systems requiring only a few radio channels to country-wide communication systems with several radio channels. They can operate as multi-channel radios, but can also be software-configured to operate as a single-channel radio. These radios support transmission of digital voice data as per ACARS and VDL mode 2 data mode standards, and allow up to 7 VoIP sessions with the receiver or transmitter. They allow multiple VCS or remote audio units to access the radio simultaneously.

The R&S Series4200 SDR’s use an I/Q modulator with a Cartesian feedback loop to ensure that VHF transmitters have excellent RF characteristics with very low noise from the carrier, minimizing spurious emissions, particularly in installations involving collocation. These SDRs can be controlled using LAN (Ethernet) and USB interfaces. The radio parameters can also be configured using a GUI on a PC using the R&S ZS4200 service and maintenance tool. These software-defined radios deliver an output power of 50 W and have a receive sensitivity of -107 dBm. They require an AC supply of 230 V/115 V and consume 45 W of power. These radios are available in compact 3U rack-mount enclosures. They are ideal air traffic control (ATC) communications applications.
