Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) and the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) partners to drive terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) integration. This collaboration will focus on Direct-to-Device (D2D) and IoT services, expanding mobile coverage and supporting the evolving needs of connected and autonomous transportation systems.
The agreement between MSSA and 5GAA establishes a framework for cooperation in critical areas such as technological research, spectrum management, and network integration. By combining MSSA’s expertise in satellite-based mobile connectivity with 5GAA’s leadership in automotive communication, the partnership seeks to create a seamless, global mobile ecosystem.
Mark Dankberg, Chairman of MSSA, emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “This alliance addresses one of the largest target markets for NTN augmentation of mobile networks and the automotive industry’s demand for standards-based, open architecture solutions enabled by a 5G ecosystem including licensed satellite spectrum holders. Together, MSSA and 5GAA will play a crucial role in augmenting the coverage and capacity of terrestrial networks while also enhancing aspects such as safety, operating efficiency, convenience, and entertainment.”
Johannes Springer, Director General of 5GAA, highlighted the impact on transportation and road safety: “The collaboration with MSSA is a pivotal moment for the advancement of ubiquitous connected mobility. By making non-terrestrial networks interwork with our cellular technology, we can create more resilient, scalable solutions that meet the growing demand for safer, more efficient transportation systems.”
Transforming Next-Generation Connectivity
The partnership will focus on Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) technologies, a key enabler for autonomous driving, intelligent traffic management, and road safety applications. By integrating satellite and cellular networks, MSSA and 5GAA aim to ensure reliable connectivity even in remote areas where traditional mobile networks are limited.
Beyond the technical aspects, the agreement also underscores the importance of regulatory alignment to support seamless global operations. Both organizations will work together to advocate for policies that facilitate NTN integration while ensuring compliance with regional telecom regulations.
A Collaborative Effort for Future Innovation
MSSA and 5GAA will coordinate efforts in knowledge sharing, technical development, and regulatory initiatives, supporting the evolution of mobile networks and automotive connectivity. This partnership marks a step forward in bridging the gap between terrestrial and satellite networks, ultimately driving innovation in global mobility.
