Teledyne Storm Microwave Offers FlatPhase™ 100 Cables that Operate up to 50 GHz

Teledyne Storm Microwave, a leading manufacturer of wires, cables, and interconnect solutions, along with Test & Measurement products for defense, telecom, and other applications, has developed the FlatphaseTM cable series that is designed to operate at frequencies up to 50 GHz and deliver exceptional performance with an attenuation of just 2.068 dB/ft. The FlatPhase™ 100 Series from Teledyne Storm Microwave is engineered to deliver exceptional performance in demanding environments, making it a go-to solution for applications that require best-in-class phase stability over a wide temperature range.

Designed specifically for defense applications, including aircraft and ground stations, where traditional PTFE dielectric cables often underperform, cables of this series utilize Teledyne’s proprietary foamed fluoropolymer dielectric, which eliminates the typical PTFE knee and ensures a flatter phase response. This unique dielectric design enables the cable to maintain accuracy even under large temperature swings, reducing the need for frequent recalibrations and improving long-term stability.

The FlatPhase 100 Series cables feature a compact diameter of 0.094 inches (2.39 mm) and operate at frequencies up to 50 GHz, with a typical VSWR of 1.37 up to its maximum frequency. It exhibits remarkably low attenuation, measured at just 0.355 dB/ft at 2 GHz, 0.835 dB/ft at 10 GHz, and 2.068 dB/ft at 50 GHz. This low-loss performance is complemented by excellent power handling, capable of managing an average of 140 watts at 1 GHz and shielding effectiveness exceeding 90 dB at 1 GHz.

The cable is phase-stable across temperature variations, with deviations as low as -46 ppm at -55°C, -56 ppm at +20°C, and -58 ppm at +85°C, along with a phase stability under flexure of just ±17.1° at 50 GHz. Its minimum bend radius is 0.47 inches (static) and 0.94 inches (dynamic), and it offers robust connector retention strength of 25 lbs (11.3 kg). With a velocity of propagation of 80.7% and an operating temperature range from -55°C to +125°C, it delivers consistent performance in both controlled and harsh environments.

The FlatPhase™ 100 Series incorporates a helically wrapped silver-plated copper (SPC) primary shield, fully captivated connectors, and combination hex/knurl coupling nuts, ensuring mechanical durability and ease of installation. Key advantages of this cable series include increased phase and insertion loss stability during flexure, reduced leakage, improved connector retention, and overall system performance enhancement. These benefits translate into meeting stringent phase requirements, maintaining signal-to-noise ratios, and reducing the risk of performance degradation over time.

For applications requiring additional mechanical protection, Teledyne offers an armored version of the FlatPhase™ 100, featuring a stainless-steel flat wire spiral, fiberglass braid, and silicone jacket. This armored variant maintains flexibility while providing increased cut and crush resistance, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments without compromising the cable’s electrical performance. The armored cable measures 0.276 inches (7.00 mm) in diameter and operates within the same -55°C to +125°C temperature range.

The Teledyne Storm Microwave FlatPhase™ 100 Series stands out as an extremely effective, reliable, and versatile cable solution for environments where phase stability, low loss, and mechanical resilience are critical.
