The HL7900E from Sierra Wireless is a 5G LPWA Module that operates in the 4G LTE (Cat-M1/NB2) bands, and also covers Band 8 to enable utilities in the US to deploy their own private 900 MHz networks. It is designed as a cost-optimised solution for large-scale, long-lived deployments and offers more power-efficient connectivity than the previous generation of HL78 series modules. These features enable improved connectivity performance for the next generation of battery-powered IoT devices. This module delivers a data rate of 590 Kbps (DL) & 1100 Kbps (UL) in the Cat-M mode, and 127 Kbps (DL) & 158 Kbps (UL) in the Cat-NB2 mode.
The HL7900E 5G LPWA module uses security keys to protect connectivity and supports free, secure over-the-air firmware upgrades, enabling future-proof deployments. It also simplifies operations and reduces the total cost of ownership with the Smart Connectivity platform, offering single-point management. This LPWA module has a built-in stack that supports multiple internet protocols, including HTTP and TLS, for network management, and can be controlled via UART, USB, and GPIO interfaces. It is available in a compact LGA package that measures 15.0 x 18.0 x 2.4 mm, offering scalability and simplifying migration between technologies.
